Mara grew up in Willow Spring, North Carolina and, after living in several cities across the state, recently relocated to Pittsboro. She earned her B.A. in English and B.S. in psychology from Barton College, where she worked as a writing tutor on campus and volunteered as an editor for their journal, LifeLines. She then earned her paralegal certification from UNC Chapel Hill and her M.F.A in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte, where she also worked as an editor for Qu. In recent years, she has worked as a domestic violence advocate, a paralegal for an advocacy program for Native Americans, and a copyeditor for another North Carolina-based publisher. In her work at Technica, Mara supports editors, assists in managing a magazine, and helps to facilitate the peer review process for several journals. In her spare time, she volunteers as an editor for the Southern Review of Books, writes mostly poetry, watches copious amounts of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and horror movies, and enjoys spending time with her fiance, Christian, and their cat, Frankie.
